Miami Beach Senior High’s film club and its Digital Media and Creative Arts academies showcased fifteen comedic romantic films in their own “Romance in a Can” film festival on Thursday, February 12 in the Beach High auditorium. The festival also had other locations across the city where other films were shown just in time for Valentine’s Day. Short films created by Miami Beach’s local students were screened and given recognition by Channel 2, and the City of Miami Beach itself.

Students from Miami Beach Senior High scripted, directed, and produced their own few minute films which were featured in the “Romance in a Can” film festival where they received awards for Best All Around, Best Script, and Best Cinematography.

“It was really a good opportunity.” said Eric Jaffe, junior participant. “My films took only a few hours to film and a day to edit.”

 “LoveDoc,” “PopTart,” and “Secret Admirer” were winners for the three competitive categories. The films were judged by a panel of people which included director of movies “Marley and Me,” and “The Devil Wears Prada,” David Frankel.

“I am looking foward to entering into different film competitions with Sean McDougall again (partner), where I hope to win again,” said Everett Lema, senior co-winner of the Best Cinematography film.

All proceeds from the ten dollar admission went to benefiting the Film Department and the 2010 film festival at Miami Beach Senior High, and next year, the film club expects an even larger turn out.

“I look foward to entering something even better next year” said Jaffe.

I then got some pretty decent quotes from some people who participated in the contest. I never actually saw any of the films, but my partner Lena who wrote a section about the good, bad and ugly films. Writing my part of this article from a news perspective was a task on its own, since everyone was extremely opinionated about how the film festival was critiqued, and run.

In the future, I hope to contact people who are higher up in the events, such as the person who put together the entire event. Or someone who participated in the festival in a different location. I also should have probably found out how much the film club raised; but overall I believe its a pretty good, well rounded article.

Beach High Players Looking to Continue in College

With a long history of winning games, and spirited sports teams, Miami Beach Senior High has an attractive list of sports that their students can get involved with. Duane Starks, a defensive back for the NFL, and Neal Walk, an NBM player for the Pheonix Suns, believe it or not, are High-Tide alumni; but before making it to the pros, they started at college level.

This year, colleges and universities from across the country will be scouting out players from Miami Beach Senior High who are active with sports.

            “Students who play for teams in high school should be at the top of their game all the time if they even want to be looked at by a college their senior year.” said Jacob Shaw, girls basketball coach. “It’s hard to compete for a spot on a team at a quality university.”

            So what should be done to grab a spot on a University league?

            “Schools have thousands of applicants for scholarships, and they wouldn’t even know who you were unless you got your name out there.” said Joseph Pardo, senior water-polo player. “but whatever school I get in to, I’ll hope to play for them; and Beach High’s polo team is really what got me interested in it at all.”

            “I wish I could have kept playing football at UF and I tried, but I didn’t make it to the team.” said former beach high football player Mike Dussie.

            According to the admissions office at the University of Florida, and the University of Miami, colleges look for similar qualities with their recruitment prospects. Active students involved with sports who are interested in being recruited for a college team should start playing early in their freshman or sophomore years; they need to maintain at least a 2.0 un-weighted GPA; and they should try to take on leadership positions like being captain of their team, in order to get recognized.

            “Nobody from the class of 09’ has been offered a scholarship yet,” said Ken Speigleman, defensive football coach. “but UM is said to be the pipeline to the pros, and maybe Beach High can eventually be the pipeline to the college teams.”

            Looks like the Hi-Tides need to step up their game.
